Handyman in Chicopee, MA

Chicopee borders Springfield to the north, a city of about 55,000 people where the Chicopee River meets the Connecticut. It grew up as a cluster of mill villages, each with its own center and churches: Chicopee Center, once called Cabotville, around the Dwight mills; Chicopee Falls upriver, home to factories that made everything from bicycles and tires to sporting goods; and Willimansett and Aldenville along the Connecticut River, which drew many French-Canadian families, alongside the large Polish community that still gives the city its kielbasa-capital reputation. After World War II, Westover Field, now Westover Air Reserve Base, brought a wave of new housing, and neighborhoods like Fairview, Burnett Road and Smith Highlands filled in with capes, ranches and split-levels. So Chicopee's housing ranges from brick mill-era rowhouses and wood-frame two- and three-family homes near the old centers to postwar single-family streets and newer condos. Much of it is now sixty years old or more, and it shows in the plumbing, the doors and the exteriors.

Chicopee is crossed by more highways than most cities its size: I-90, I-91, I-291 and I-391 all pass through, and Memorial Drive and Chicopee Street carry the local traffic between neighborhoods. Westover's big C-5 cargo planes are a familiar sight overhead. The city has good green space, too: Chicopee Memorial State Park, with its reservoir and walking loop, Szot Park along Bemis Pond, the Chicopee Canal Walk through the center and the Connecticut RiverWalk and Bikeway along the river. The Basilica of Saint Stanislaus in Chicopee Center reflects the city's deep Polish roots, and the old mill buildings along the river have been turned into apartments, offices and studios. Winters here feel a little harder than in some valley towns, with snow and wind across the flat ground near the base, and many older houses close to the river deal with damp basements and peeling exterior paint.

What Chicopee neighbors book most

Chicopee is a short hop up I-391 or Chicopee Street for us, and we're comfortable working in multi-families, mill conversions and postwar capes alike.

Jobs we handle a lot around Chicopee

Chicopee's housing keeps us busy with practical work. In the mill-era multi-families we repair plaster and drywall, adjust doors that have settled over the decades, tighten railings on back stairs and porches, and replace worn faucets, toilets and shutoff valves. In the postwar capes and ranches we replace original vanity lights and ceiling fixtures, add ceiling fans in upstairs bedrooms where summer heat collects under the roof, swap out disposals, and hang new interior and storm doors; our licensed electricians and plumbers make the connections. Outside, we clean and re-pitch gutters, add downspout extensions, repair chain-link and wood fences and pressure wash siding and walks. Landlords call us for unit turnovers, and homeowners call us for the long fall list before winter.

Questions we hear in Chicopee

Can you work in an older multi-family where units share plumbing?

Yes. In Chicopee's two- and three-family homes, units are often stacked and the plumbing runs through shared walls and risers. Before we replace a faucet or toilet, we find the right shutoffs, or add new ones where they're missing, so a repair upstairs doesn't mean shutting off water for the whole building longer than needed. Our licensed plumbers handle the connections and we give the other units a heads-up if water has to go off.

Do you work in Fairview and the neighborhoods near Westover?

Yes. Fairview, Aldenville, Burnett Road and the streets around the base are mostly capes and ranches from the 1950s and 1960s. Common jobs there include replacing original bath fixtures, hanging new doors, installing ceiling fans, fixing fence gates and cleaning gutters. Many people stationed at Westover rent, and we're happy to work with landlords and tenants on move-in and move-out lists.

Why are my upstairs bedrooms so hot in summer and cold in winter?

In the many Chicopee capes from the 1950s, the upstairs rooms sit right under the roof with knee walls and often thin insulation. A ceiling fan helps a lot in summer, and we can install one properly with a braced fan-rated box. In winter, sealing gaps around knee-wall access doors and weatherstripping drafty doors makes a noticeable difference. For full insulation work, we'll suggest checking the Mass Save programs with an insulation contractor.

Can you help get a unit ready for a new tenant quickly?

Yes. Send us the list and photos and we'll price it as one job. Typical turnover work includes patching and painting walls, replacing blinds and cabinet hardware, fixing doors and locks, repairing faucets and toilets, swapping light fixtures, testing smoke and CO detectors and a final clean of the areas we worked in. We'll aim to finish in one visit so the unit can be shown quickly.
